Contestants will be picked from across the US then brought together to train and test their skills. There will be weekly knock-outs until a winner is picked.
The show will also feature regular High School Musical-themed tie-ins expected to include appearances from its stars.
ABC is hoping to air the as-yet-untitled show in the summer. It is the first time Disney Channel has licensed its School Musical title to other broadcasters.
