Entertainment Weekly reports that producers John Wells and David Zabel are planning to ask actors who have previously starred on the show to return for the final season.
"We want to revisit characters that have existed on the show over the years and say where they are now," Zabel said, when asked about a potential return for Clooney and Julianna Margulies, who played his love interest Carol.
"We'd love to get them all back in some way, but that doesn't mean we're going to. But we're going to try."
Zabel confirmed that Dr Carter, played by Noah Wyle, will return for a four episode stint while Goran Visnjic's Dr Kovac is likely to make an appearance.
"The toughest will be getting Tony Edwards [Dr Greene] because his character is dead," Zabel said.
"That's a little tricky, but there are ways to do it that we've thought about. Even if it were like a lost episode from 1996 featuring him and Wyle."
ER, devised by novelist Michael Crichton, premiered in 1994 and has garnered several Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe.
