The My New Best Friend star will produce a character-driven show that interacts with unassuming members of the public, according to Variety.
Showtime's head of entertainment Robert Greenblatt described Wootton as "the new Sasha Baron Cohen".
Wootton's credits include High Spirits With Shirley Ghostman and Marc Wootton Exposed.
The show, which is likely to air in the summer, will be produced and directed by Misha Manson-Smith.
