The SNL comedian will take the reins of the NBC talkshow at some point in 2009, when O'Brien replaces Jay Leno on The Tonight Show.
"Jimmy is more than just a likeable guy and a great comedian, he is genuinely interested in what people have to say," said Ben Silverman, chairman of NBC Entertainment.
Fallon, who has long been rumoured for the role, told Variety he would not be making huge changes to the format. "We're not going to reinvent the wheel here," he said. "We're going to take a lot of time to think about what we're going to do."
