'Heroes: Fugitives' - The Verdict
Published Monday, Feb 23 2009, 21:46 GMT | By Ben Rawson-Jones | 23 comments

It seems as if Heroes showrunner Tim Kring is constantly reacting towards the criticism of the previous chapter beginnings. Volume Two rightly received stick for being slow and meditative, then Volume Three came along and was unfairly slammed for being frenzied and action-packed, and now 'Fugitives' appears to be an uneasy mix of new and old, largely failing to merge an unravelling story and action in a successful manner.

'Fugitives' also moves backwards in a bid to do some crowdpleasing, with Noah Bennet resuming his ambiguous baddie role from the first season and Sylar regressing to the menacing murderer in search of a parent (this time his daddy). At one stage Claire remarks: "I know he's out there, I can feel it in my gut". Perhaps her stomach has a serious sense of déjà-vu, like much of the viewers. Still, while falling back on old hits might not bode well for the new material, these tried and tested characters are always compelling to watch.

Just when hopes in 'Fugitives' were fading, out pops a stunning reminder that Heroes is still capable of delivering stylish, spectacular sequences that transcend the confines of mere television. The attempted 'breakout' on the plane by the heroes, lavishly shot in slow-motion and bathed in emotive music, plunges us into the tense environment of the characters as they cling on for dear life. As the plane plummets to the ground the dreaded 'To Be Continued...' flashes up, and the great cliffhanger makes us crave its resolution.

Perhaps Heroes just needs to adopt the Lost and Battlestar Galactica strategy and announce a fixed end date in perhaps 2011. This could give the show some added focus and fully develop the various characters and plotlines towards a satisfying conclusion, rather than this frustrating chopping and changing that leaves hardly anyone satisfied. It's about time Heroes had faith in its own superpowers.

I love Heroes it's my fav programme and i definately think this series is better than the second one! Many people think that this series is rubbish but i beg to differ. I like the whole battle between the Petrelli brothers however, now that it has been spilled that there is people with disabilites, i don't see where it can go in the future!

I kind of agree with the article. Heroes is still compelling but it has had a rocky couple of series. I didn't mind the slower pace of series 2 but series 3 so far has been too much of a rollercoaster to get any feeling of continuation. The miraculous eclipse that lasted for hours and was equally visible from different continents was just dire. They had such a great character with Peter Petrelli (and to a lesser extent with Sylar) but having given them incredible powers now just keep finding ways to cripple them each series to keep things going. Still, it is still good to watch the characters and see what happens.

Different volume, same old shit. Characters have no motivation, dreadful acting, nobody dies, plots started and then abandoned. Please, would someone please put Heroes out of it's misery.

OK, Ando would never kill Hiro much like Hiro would nerver kill Ando(early season 3). What did Hiro see ... Ando shooting him with energy and him being knocked to the floor. We now know that energy is Power supper charger so the context of the scene Hiro saw is totally different to what he observed but that happens every single time a character gets a brief glimpse of the future I'm more shocked that a suposed TV critic is being duped to expect an out of character division between the shows double act.

I don't see how anyone can stand watching this show anymore. It has become an embarassing shell of what was at one time a decent if highly unoriginal sci fi series. I was prepared to give it a chance with volume 4 after the laughable mess that was volume 3 where characterisation seemed to change from episode to episode, but as soon as Matt Parkman started painting the future I switched off immediately and won't be watching it again. There's only so many times I'll watch the same thing over and over, and apparently that's all Heroes is now, a repetitive retread of past ideas every time. Personally, I blame the producers' refusal to get rid of 'dead wood' characters like the whole Bennet family, Matt Parkman and Sylar on the creative suffocation the writers are forced to work under. Additionally, there seems to be a bad habit of introducing, building up and then abandoning and ignoring new characters in the show(Where's Molly at these days for instance? And what the hell was the point of Bruce Boxleitner's character in the first episode of season 3?). Rubbish.

Volume 3 was amazing. The first 12/13 episodes of season 3 was Heroes at it's best. Volume 4 has seriously sucked so far. i agree with Digital Spy on this. Something good needs to happen, and soon!

For a science fiction drama, I am starting to find that Heroes is losing any slight bit of a realism it may have once had. I for one cannot understand beyond the life of me why none of the captured heroes seem to be able to muster up the courage to shout to their captors "HE CAN FLY!" in regards to Nathan Petrelli, a total and utter hypocrite who is locking up his own kind, the same people who just happened to save his life! It's almost as ludicrous as that double episode in Volume 3 where everyone lost their powers, Sylar and Claire died, everyone got their powers back, Sylar and Claire resurrected! Another thing...have they totally run out of ideas for superpowers...the comic book guy that can breath underwater...WHAT THE HELL?!?! "Oh no! Sylar's coming to kill me, but don't worry, I can just jump into the river and live!" I am just now finding myself to not give a toss about the characters because they are changing as much as the British climate, and they keeping bringing in new ones which have no depth or magnitude whatsoever! I will continue for now as I think it is stupid to leave a job unfinished but I am no longer as gripped by it as I was with Season 1, and I would recommend to all you die hard Heroes fans to tune into 24 and Lost instead...

I totally disagree too. It might be too late for heroes but surely this episode was much better than 'villians', which other than Sylar baking deserved to be dumped. The only bits I found annoying was the end drammatic, but then Peter can fly, and is presumably now invulerable too, so where is the tension, really...

I agree it was a bit slow but when the "to be continued" came up i couldn't wait for the next episode and i hope this chapter will reach its full potential.

AWESOME!!! Volume 3 ended good and although episode one of Volume 4 was quite good, the second episode (BBC3) was superb: one of the best (top 4/5) this season.

I taped both episodes last night but really don't know if I can be bothered to watch. Last year the final few episodes sat on my hard drive a few weeks before I forced myself to watch them - enjoyable enough, but not a patch on the first or even the second season, which personally I felt bettered the third.

I don't know what to make of Heroes any more; the constant change in the characters with little justification beyond a writer seemingly thinking 'oh this would be cool' is just too much. Plus, with Peter, they turned him into this ultra-cool character with all the powers, and then seemed to say 'uh oh, he's too strong now' and have been coming up with these excuses to take powers away from him - and it sucks. Worst of all though is Claire. If I have to sit through one more scene of her bloody daddy issues and that pouting face and 'ooo isn't bennet ambiguous', then I might well be done with the show. HOW MANY MORE TIMES are they going to play that one? It should have been done with after the hostage episode at the old family house in season 1, but they rehashed it for volume 2, and then AGAIN volume 3, and now ... argh.

I agree with the review 100%. It was far too slow but the last 10 minutes showed why so many of us fell in love with it in the first place. They need to maintain that otherwise they will lose even more fans.

I don't really care about Heroes any more. It's on, and I'll watch it, but they've messed us around so much, I've no passion for it. Shame, 'cos that first series was great.

I have been a fan of Heores since the start and I have been downloading Heroes - fugitives from the USA, it's just shown episode 4 over there. Fugitives is awful, Tom Kring is pawing at the air and praying for ideas, none have come, so he has decided to restart the show in order to tempt new fans and to hell with older ones. Story lines are scrapped and new caracters Sylars brother is annoying, the hunter has a gim reputation but does emaniations of a seedy pervert count as a power? and Patrellis boss quickly bins her ethics and morals upon witnessing a person with powers use them. Its a mess, the characters have no intergity anymore, Senator Patrelli is quick to cage the Heroes because they are "dangerous" even tho they helped him saved his daughter and New York. Its too late now for Heroes, series 1 was fantasic and with series 2 a lot of us thought it was poor because of the writers strike and it would be redemned with a great third series. nope Kring has treated the fans with contempt and has even called us dip-s***s. Let heroes die, and hopefully Kring wont have another idea.

I enjoyed the opening episode a lot. Maybe because its been off the screens for a few months. I have watched every season so far and found them all pretty good. Some better than others. But the opening episode definately had me gripped.

Heroes clearly started brilliantly, but the authors review is nearly right on the money. I'm finding the goal in the 87th minute theory lacking for me though. What's losing me, and others I'm sure, is the continuing total personality changes every character is undergoing with virtually no motivation. Look, if I undergo some life changing trauma, like fighting in Afghanistan or something, I might have some mental scars, but if all I do is move a can of beans with my mind, I'm unlikely to turn into a mass murderer, or give up my power hungry life to pleas a mum who actually isn't. You get my drift here eh!! Cut your losses Tim Kring and move on, or let someone with real vision take over and sort out what has become a total farce. We are not amused.
