S03E02: 'The Butterfly Effect'

S03E02: 'The Butterfly Effect'
So… Angela Petrelli is Sylar's mother, Bob loses much more than the Midas Touch and his hair, Tracy turns into a hot version of Mr Freeze and Mohinder has metamorphosed into Jeff Goldblum from The Fly. Phew! With all these delicious twists and much more, Heroes continues to soar at a dizzy pace and sustain the momentum from the amazing third season premiere.

The all-enveloping darkness continues to grip, with Angela's visually stunning nightmare providing some major chills. This superbly directed sequence, featuring Claire's butchered head and Hiro's impaled body, is very graphic for a mainstream television show and damn effective. If only the same could be said for Mohinder and Maya's courtship. Come on Mo, either strip her off or use your powers to send her on a trip to meet her brother.

Claire's pleasure at receiving pain is an interesting concept, as she states that it's the "only time I know I'm still human". With this dark S&M subtext the daring cheerleader is in danger of becoming a 1980s Depeche Mode lyric.

It was just a question of time before Sylar paid The Company and Bob a visit, and when he did it provided a destructive climax to the episode as the other Big Bad contenders were released into the wild. Cleverly, the balding fat mentalist called Jesse just happens to be a trapped Peter Petrelli!

Heroes is hardly known for being a laughterfest, yet the scene in which desert-stricken Matt Parkman believed he was talking with a turtle was inspired. Right now, the same can be said for the show itself.
