'Heroes' S03E12: 'Our Father'
Oh no, not another Heroes episode in which the story clunkingly flits between past and present, with various characters being killed off but not staying dead for long. Those were the main fears during the opening few minutes of 'Our Father', which follows on from the dreadful 'Eclipse' two-parter. However, thanks to some fine acting and writing, Heroes actually pulled it off.

The time hopping worked well, as both Claire and Hiro shared emotive, tender meetings with their parents. The latter, mistaken for a chef, features in one particularly poignant scene where he hears his own father slating him while standing alongside his junior self! Besides, it’s a real pleasure to see George Takei ruling the roost as Kaito – as opposed to picking cockroaches out of Joe Swash’s orifices in the Australian jungle.

Sylar provides a great deal of the excitement and thrills throughout the episode. He’s recently undergone something of an emotional crisis, but his return to full-on villainy is superb and features plenty of enjoyably corny quips. In a way, Sylar is like an old rock band who decide to ditch their new material in favour of playing their greatest hits.

Sylar’s suggestion of “cake?” is a real gem when a group of office workers storm into a room trying to throw a surprise birthday bash for Sue Landers – only to see her in a less than celebratory condition. On a more serious level, his bullet-stopping confrontation with Arthur Petrelli, complete with a life-changing Q&A session, is one of the standout scenes in this inconsistent third season of the show.

Moreover, while it’s sad to lose Elle and Arthur Petrelli - both of them seem pretty dead and look likely to stay dead - given the recent revival gimmicks on the show, it’s nice to think that it’s moving in the right direction on this front. Or else there’s hardly any suspense or drama when it comes to the fates of the characters.

A great episode, it's about time Arthur Petrelli died, he was getting annoying. Such a shame about Elle, such a brilliant character. Why kill her? She will be sorely missed.

This was one of the best episodes of a very inconsistent series so far. Hiro meeting his mother and also Clare and her adoptive parents. It's something I've wondered about in my own life so it was interesting. Also Sylars return to villainy is long overdue, I don't know why they messed around with that. He's a bad guy. It's ok if they make it possible to work with him on occasion or that he isn't completely merciless but he's bad so let him carry on with that. Good to hear about original writers coming back because all of this power swapping is very annoying.

Finally a little emotion. With all the plot the writers missed out character moments. Masi once again proves that he's a REALLY good actor. Upset that Elle is definatly dead even though she clearly died las episdode.

Loved this episode! Sylar's return to villiany is fantastic, he's so much better at being the bad guy! (Oh, and Bob from Massachusetts - A shot to the head would kill someone with Claire's ability, it mentioned that in a previous episode with Adam Monroe.)

I figured Arthur knew to appear there and then from making a "future drawing". I loved Sylar in this episode "This won't hurt *woman uses her power* you got me, I lied". Sylar is like Dexter, deliciously dark with his one liners. It is kind of a shame for him though that he won't become "Gabriel" again like we saw in episode 4. Him trying to find a new path as hero/anti-hero/loving son etc was one of my favourite things about Volume 3. Finally, YAY for George Takei appearing!

Best episode of Season 3 yet! Very touching scene with Hiro, and it's great to see Sylar back to true villianous form. Cake, anyone?

Much better than last week; George Takei was excellent - as was Masi Oka in very emotional scenes. How did Arthur Petrelli know to appear when he did though?

The Petrelli death made no sense. The Haitian blunts all powers. Sylar and Petrelli, if the Haitian was weakened then both Sylar and Petrelli should have had powers. Plus when old man Petrelli stole Peter's powers he also had Claire's powers. Therefore this episode makes no sense unless they mean to bring old man Petrelli back. Otherwise nice to have crazy Sylar back. I am tired of Hiro playing the fool.

The episode I've been waiting for - much, much better - after stealing Hiro's powers - Arthur had to die this time. Good to see Gorjus George back in it.
