The producers of Lost have revealed that they are "shocked" that the show has been nominated for an Emmy.

Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof admitted that they weren't sure if the fifth season's time travel element would grab the attention of the annual awards ceremony, TV Guide reports.

"We are very happy, and we are kind of shocked. Doing the time travel-heavy genre, we did not have any expectations that we would get nominated," said Cuse.

Lindelof added: "The idea that we made it into the mix with the limitations of broadcast is pretty exciting to us."

The series has been nominated for outstanding drama series, while Michael Emerson, who portrays villainous character Benjamin Linus, received a nomination for outstanding supporting actor.

Cuse revealed that Emerson's nod came as no surprise to the programme's crew, adding: "Michael has been such an amazing part of the show. His performance, particularly in the episode The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham, is spectacular."

It was recently reported that the show's producers had asked fans to write a theme song which encapsulates their feelings about what it means to them.

The 61st annual
Emmy Awards will be broadcast on September 20.
