Michael Emerson has teased that Lost's flash-sideways are 'very important'.

Since the start of the show's sixth and final season, the producers have introduced a parallel universe narrative, which follows the survivors of flight 815 in a world where their plane never crashed.

Speaking to E! Online, Emerson said that his alter ego Ben Linus will build a significant relationship with Terry O'Quinn's Locke in the alternate world.

"They have an important relationship," he said. "Yeah... friends."

Discussing the new version of Ben, he added: "Think of it this way - he has all the same characteristics that Ben has, but they're in different quantities.

"He has some of the same urges or fantasies, but they're not as powerful with him."

Lost continues Tuesdays at 9pm on ABC in the US and Fridays at 9pm on Sky1 in the UK.
