Warning: This article is a summary of the Lost episode that aired Tuesday, March 9 in the US and that will air Friday, March 12 in the UK.

On the island: Ben runs through woods and tells Sun, Miles and co that Sayid killed Dogen and the smoke monster killed everyone else - including Jacob. He suggests that they head to the beach. Sun leads the way.

Flash-sideways: Ben is teaching a class about Elba. "It's where Napoleon faced his greatest test. Without any power he was meaningless." He learns he'll have to stop history club to take detention. He's referred to as "Linus", but he corrects the teacher: "It's Doctor Linus, actually." Locke tells him he should run for Principal. Another teacher refers to Locke as 'the substitute'.

On the island: Miles enquires about the smoke monster. Ilana counters by asking about his ability to read the minds of the dead. She presents him with something of Jacob's and asks how he died. Ben lies when Miles suggests he killed him. Ilana mysteriously says, "Jacob was the closest thing I had to a father" before wandering off into the jungle.

On the island: Ben is being ignored by Ilana and co.

Flash-sideways: Ben looks after his dad, who is visibly sick. "I wanted so much more for you Ben. That's why I signed up for the damned Dharma initiative and took you to that island. Who knows what would have happened if we'd stayed..." Alex arrives at the house and enquires about history club; she's a student.

On the island: Sun tells Ilana she wants to find Jin. Ilana says she wants the same thing, but she doesn't know which of them she's meant to protect: "You're candidates to replace Jacob."

Richard appears and offers to help Hurley and Jack find their way back to the temple.

Ilana points a gun at Ben and tells him to walk. She leads him away and tells him to start digging his own grave.

Flash-sideways: Alex worries about the future - in particular college. She complains about the Principal and calls him a pervert. Ben asks what she means and she clarifies: she caught him having sex with the school nurse.

On the island: Ben continues to dig his grave. Miles mocks him, then brings him food. Ben offers him $3.2 million to help him. Miles references Nikki and Paolo and the fact that they are buried with money.

Hurley questions why Richard doesn't age. "Jacob gave me a gift," he replies. Jack learns from Richard that everyone from the temple is dead. Richard tells Hurley not to believe what Jacob tells him, then storms off. "There's something I need to do - die."

Flash-sideways: Ben asks another teacher to hack into the school nurse's email account. He agrees, if Ben gives him a good driving space if he is appointed as the new principal.

On the island: Richard tells Jack and Hurley that he can't kill himself because Jacob touched him. He asks for their help to die because he think his life has no purpose now that Jacob is dead. Jack lights the dynamite fuse. "Now, let's talk."

Jack informs Richard that Jacob followed him and bets that neither of them will die. Sure enough, the dynamite doesn't go off.

The smoke monster appears as Locke and asks Ben why he is digging a grave. Flocke tells Ben he needs someone to be in charge of the island and asks him to come to the other island. Ben runs.

Flash-sideways: Ben visits the principal and shows him some emails from the school nurse. He tries to blackmail him into resigning, but the principal says he'll ruin Alex's future if Ben continues to blackmail him.

On the island: Ilana catches up with Ben. He points a gun at her and tells her about Alex's death. "I had a chance to save her, but I choose the island." He tells her he did it all for Jacob. Ben heads back with Ilana.

Flash-sideways: Alex thanks Ben and asks if he was responsible for her letter of recommendation from the principal.

On the island: Ben asks Sun if she needs helps, Jack and Hurley return, and a submarine watches the group on the beach. Charles Widmore is revealed as the man on the sub.
