Whilst out exploring in the jungle, Sayid, Kate and Locke discover a remote farmhouse equipped with a satellite dish. When the Iraqi approaches the house he is shot in the arm by a one-armed man, who wildly screams that he believed they had a truce. A wounded Sayid explains that he is one of the survivors from a recent plane crash on the island and oblivious to what the man is talking about. Kate and Locke, who have been hiding, suddenly appear and disarm the man.
Inside the farmhouse the eye patch wearer offers to tend to Sayid’s wound and apologises for the misunderstanding. He reveals that he is the last surviving member of the Dharma Initiative, is called Mikhail Bakunin and has been on the island for eleven years. His earlier ranting about the ‘truce’ is explained, for he claims to have worked out an understanding with the Others whereby they don’t approach his land and vice versa. Mikhail states that the agreement stemmed from a time when the Initiative wanted to purge the island of ‘hostiles’ but he refused to participate.
Whilst snooping around Mikhail’s house, Locke comes across a monitor in a separate room and discovers that he can play electronic chess against the computer. Mikhail tells him that he has no chance of winning. Meanwhile, Sayid whispers to Kate that he believes that Mikhail is one of the Others and is feeding them lies about himself. Their fears are soon confirmed when they are attacked by their new acquaintance, but overpower him.
Sayid uncovers a hidden hatch leading to a basement and decides to explore with Kate, only to discover that there are wired explosives down below. A woman suddenly appears out of the darkness and attacks Kate, but Sayid manages to restrain her. Kate recognises the woman from her time spent in captivity.
Upstairs, Locke conquers the computer in a game of chess and the monitor subsequently turns to showing a Dharma Initiative instructional film relating to communication with the outside world. Prompted to enter various codes in answer to the questions, Locke is told in a pre-recorded message that both the satellite and sonar communication devices are not functional. However, before he can type in a code - 77 - that would say the hostiles have breached the base, Mikhail sneaks up behind him and puts a knife to his throat.
Kate and Sayid take the woman upstairs and discover Locke being held at gunpoint outside. The woman and Mikhail embark on a passionate argument, only for the one-eyed man to shoot his fellow Other. He is then wrestled to the ground, begging to be killed. His life is spared and he watches as the farmhouse is left in flames by an explosion.
Concurrently at the beach camp, Sawyer was angered by the fact that many of the items he had stashed away were taken by others whilst he was away. He then devises a way to be reunited with the stash - by challenging other plane crash survivors to games of table tennis. He is beaten by Hurley, who then takes pity and gives him back some magazines as a kind gesture.
Throughout his time at the farmhouse, Sayid has a flashback about his time as a chef in Paris. Whilst working in a kitchen, he is summoned outside to meet a man called Sami - also from Iraq - who offers him a job in another restaurant. Sayid pays the establishment a visit, but when he encounters Sami’s wife she confirms to her husband that the chef had previously tortured her as a member of the Republican Guard. Sayid vehemently denies this, but receives a savage beating at the hands of Sami. Later, in private, Sayid admit’s the truth to Sami’s wife, saying that her face has haunted him since he tortured her. This is all she wants to hear, as she saves Sayid from a further beating by telling her husband that it was a case of mistaken identity and that the chef should be allowed to go free.
