Charlie learns from Naomi that his band Driveshaft enjoyed a commercial renaissance after news broke of the rock star’s apparent death in the plane crash. His joy soon disappears when Desmond tells him of a premonition that involves Charlie drowning after flicking a switch in an underwater base. The plus side is that Desmond also has visions of Claire and her baby being subsequently rescued.
Charlie’s death seems consistent with the newly formed plan to switch off the signal at The Looking Glass and the British rocker volunteers for the dangerous mission. He even lies and says he can hold his breath for four minutes, in order to convince Jack.
Karl, the young man previously set free from The Others by Sawyer, turns up on the beach with the news that the attack is going to take place a day sooner than expected. He was told this earlier by Alex, who overheard Ben talking with Richard. With very little time left before their enemies arrive, the plans are altered to involve the dynamite being blown up by Sayid, Jin and Bernard by firing guns at the designated tents. Jack will lead the rest of the camp to the radio tower.
Charlie and Desmond use the boat that Karl arrived in to head to the Looking Glass, after the Mancunian said farewell to Claire and Aaron, slipping the baby his treasured ring in the process. Above the base, Charlie hands Desmond a piece of paper containing his favourite five memories, dubbing them his ‘greatest hits’. Meeting Claire occupies the top slot.
Desmond has a change of heart and decides to take on the seemingly one-way mission himself, but Charlie knocks him unconscious with an oar and places the bit of paper in his pocket. He then heads underwater and into the base, only to discover an opening into a water-free room just as he was running out of breath. His relief is turned to horror as two women suddenly appear and point their guns at him.
