Lanter, who plays Liam, told E! Online that he thinks the move will introduce some interesting storylines.
"We're having a blast," he said. "It's a big time in the kids' lives right now because of the transition from high school to college."
Lanter continued: "There's real world possibilities that open up when you go to college now, so I'm really looking forward to the stories that they come up with and how they can be exciting in a real life way rather than just walking down the school hallways."
Earlier this month, Lanter's co-star Trevor Donovan confirmed that he will leave 90210 next season.
His departure comes after it emerged that Lori Loughlin and Ryan Eggold will not be returning. Cast member Shenae Grimes has criticised the way they were written out of the show.
90210 will return for its new season on The CW in the fall.
