The Star Trek star appeared as the sinister William Bell in the first two seasons of the show. However, the character was killed off in the second season finale and Nimoy has since announced his retirement from acting.
Producer Jeff Pinkner told a panel audience at Comic Con: "Should we be able to convince him to come out of retirement again, we have another story in mind [for William Bell]."
He also praised Nimoy and explained that he was pleased to have cast the actor in what may be his final part.
"He really was so unbelievably gracious," Pinker said. "He was initially nervous that we just wanted him for promotional value, but we really wanted to give him a swansong role."
Nimoy himself previously hinted that his character could return to Fringe.
The show's third season begins on Fox on September 23.
