She told Entertainment Weekly that the series would now switch between worlds from episode to episode.
"We're alternating episodes so we've got one in the alternate universe and one in the present universe," she explained. "If you were to skip every other episode, you would only see the story happening in one universe."
The actress revealed that the two universe format would remain in place "for the first half of the season".
"Essentially what I think is happening is they've got this two different stories that are running parallel, and then they're going to converge," she said. "Everybody's world is going to be turned upside down."
She also confirmed that the alternate universe version of her character Astrid could not be more different to the original.
She explained: "The Astrid we know is sympathetic and emotional. The other Astrid doesn't have those social graces. She's not communicative or personable."
Nicole previously admitted that she enjoys playing the alternative character.
Fringe returns to Fox on September 23.
