On the Fox sci-fi drama, Peter (Joshua Jackson) has received a premonition that he will become mysteriously connected to the device.
In an official Fox interview, showrunner Jeff Pinkner said: "I think [the First People] created it. It's clearly a technological creation, made out of technology that we have yet to come to understand."
He also suggested that different versions of the First People may have existed in the show's two parallel universes.
"Certainly there's an implication that the first people existed on both sides," he admitted. "Or that at some point both of the universes were actually one and the same. Just like mitosis, [the way] cells split."
Co-producer Joel Wyman refused to confirm the suggestion that the device could be used to combine the two realities into a single universe, but admitted that the idea was "pretty cool".
"Identical twins start as one cell that splits, with exact duplicate genetic information in both," added Pinkner. "There's no reason why universes couldn't be the same."
Fringe will return to Fox on April 15.
