Abrams said in a special prerecorded message at the Television Critics Association (TCA) summer press tour: "Fringe is a show that I'm enormously proud to be associated with.

"The work that the cast and crew have done has been amazing. But your support is really the thing that has kept it alive."

Abrams also took the opportunity to thank Fox, who kept the show on for several years in spite of its ratings performance.

"Fox has been unbelievable," he added. "It's a very great thing in this day and age that a network would support a show that isn't a massive hit.

"Fringe has always been, true to its name, more [of] an 'outside-the-box' series. The good thing about that for us is we can have these parties, these mixers, with every single viewer."

The upcoming fifth season of Fringe will be the show's last, described by star Joshua Jackson as a "gift for the fans".
