John Noble has claimed that the last episode of Fringe could be "one of the great finales of all time".

The actor - who has played eccentric scientist Walter Bishop for five seasons - told reporters that he is "extremely elated" with the sci-fi drama's final two-parter, which will be simulcast on Fox in the US and Sky1 in the UK.

"I hope history will judge it as one of the great finales of all time - I really believe they will," he said. "I can honestly say that it was everything I had hoped it could possibly be."

Noble continued: "It tied up our character lines, it tied up the great story arc... I was extremely elated."

The 64-year-old also insisted that fans will be pleased with how Walter's relationship with son Peter (Joshua Jackson) is resolved in the final episodes.

"I know that the fans love the relationship between Peter and Walter so much, and we certainly paid homage to that," he revealed. "It is really quite remarkable."

Fringe returns to Fox tonight at 9/8c and airs on Wednesdays at 10pm on Sky1.
