Recap - 'The Event': 'The Beginning of the End'

Sophia walks the streets, examining the devastation caused by the virus she unleashed. As a sick little girl screams at Sophia, blaming her for what has happened, she wakes up - the nightmarish scene was just a dream. Dr Liu later explains to Sophia that the pathogen has been altered by Leila's body chemistry and will now take several days to kill. She adds that, once released, the virus will kill 98% of the world's population in five weeks. Sophia is shocked by the statistics and begins to question her recent decisions. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Martinez's condition begins to improve, much to Christina's relief.

Carlos informs Sophia that their people are prepared to come to Earth, but explains that a satellite is monitoring the part of Tibet where the portal array is stationed. Sophia contacts Jarvis and orders him to redirect the satellite. When Jarvis informs that Martinez is recovering, Sophia declares that the former President must not be allowed to return to office. Elsewhere, Simon and Sterling are kept informed of Martinez's condition by Chief of Staff Peel. Simon has learnt that Sophia sent a team to Siberia, and coupled with Sterling's knowledge that Jarvis waived off an action on an inbound Russian passenger plane, the pair deduce that whatever Sophia uncovered is now in the US.

Watching a television broadcast on the recent mall attack, Simon recognises the perpetrator as Roman, one of his people. Sean and Vicky arrive at the address on Roman's driving licence, having previously stolen his wallet. They split up to explore the building - a warehouse - but Vicky is captured by Simon. As Blake emerges, he himself is captured by Sean. When Sean and Vicky explain that they stopped the mall attack, Simon and Sterling agree to work with them to stop Sophia from releasing the virus.

Meanwhile, a sickly Leila begs Dr Liu not to release the virus, but Liu reveals that the aliens are simply taking back the planet, since they lived on Earth before humans. Back at the hospital, Jarvis gives the order to redirect the Siberia satellite. When Christina arrives, she slaps Jarvis and accuses him of poisoning her husband. Their face-off is interrupted when a nurse announces that Martinez is awake. When Christina reveals to her weak but responsive husband that Jarvis is working with Sophia, Martinez insists on speaking with Blake Sterling.

Back at the warehouse, Simon, Sterling, Sean and Vicky search for evidence. When Simon informs Sean that Michael is dead and Leila has been recaptured, Sean vows to find his girlfriend when they are done. The foursome inspect the trash and find receipts clustered around the same area in Maryland. At that moment, Martinez calls a shocked and relieved Sterling. When Sterling updates him on Sophia's plan, Martinez decides to deal with Jarvis and insists on returning to the White House against doctor's orders. Meanwhile, Carlos contacts Sophia and informs her that all of the sleeper agents are in position at the chosen infection sights.

Using the addresses and time stamps on the receipts, Sean hacks into NSA systems and uses Chief of Staff Peel's password to gain access to NSA satellite footage. The group follow Roman's actives and spot a number of cars heading to a hidden location - the alien hide-out. At that very base, Dr Liu tells Sophia that Leila only has hours or days to live and the alien leader orders her to end Leila's suffering quickly and painlessly. As they head by car to the hide-out, Simon spots the scroll that Sean recovered from Dempsey. Simon tells Sean that if Dempsey could read the scroll, then he knew more about the aliens than he admitted.

Simon, Sterling, Sean and Vicky infiltrate the alien hide-out. Dr Liu prepares to knock out Leila with a sedative, but Leila is able to free herself from her shackles and injects Liu with the sleeping drug instead. Sean is overjoyed to find Leila, but she explains that Sophia used her to alter the virus and that she is now infected. A devastated Sean does not want to leave his girlfriend, but she tells him to stop Sophia for her.

Martinez, using a cane, returns to the White House and confronts Jarvis about his alliance with Sophia. Martinez announces his intention to reclaim the office of the President, but Jarvis insists that the weakened former President will not be approved for duty by medical professionals. Meanwhile, Simon threatens Dr Liu with torture until she gives up the password to Sophia's laptop. The group discover multiple virus distribution scenarios on the computer and begin to investigate. However, it appears to be too late, as the various sleeper agents prepare to release the pathogen. In Siberia, Gerard receives the order from Sophia to activate the portal array. As the episode concludes, an enormous portal opens in deep space.
