The actor starred as corrupt LA cop Mackey in seven seasons of FX drama The Shield until the show ended in 2008. Chiklis explained to KSiteTV that his new character Jim Powell, a police artist, is far more good-natured.
"This guy’s not Vic Mackey at all," he said. "This guy is heroic in spirit, and he’s a good man. There’s no ambivalence about that."
Chiklis explained that the lighter tone of No Ordinary Family would help the series appeal to a larger audience than his former show.
"I’m always on the lookout for something like [The Shield], but in the absence of something that good, from a hardcore drama perspective, I really wanted to do something that was decidedly lighter, that had a much broader appeal."
He added: "That’s a rare thing, where it’s universal. Often times I’ll sit with my 11 year old and survive through something she wants to watch, and often she can’t watch what I’m watching, so this is something that really has that broad deal, where everybody will really dig it."
No Ordinary Family will premiere on September 28 on ABC.
