The episode opens with Jim and Stephanie in bed. Stephanie wakes up and, hearing a noise, worries that someone is breaking in. Jim goes downstairs and discovers an intruder. He begins to strangle the man, but soon realises that it is his brother Michael. The next morning, Michael explains that he broke up with his partner and is pursuing a new business venture. When he goes for a shower, Jim asks Stephanie to go easy on him. Stephanie points out that Michael has put Jim through a lot, but Jim says that people can change.
That night, Jim, George and Michael go for a drink. Michael offers to pay but receives a call and claims it is from his accountant. When he goes outside, Jim and George realise that Michael called himself and go to find him. George heads home and Jim eventually finds Michael being beaten. Jim saves him, but the attackers get into their van and reverse it into Jim, causing him to fall off the roof of the building. Michael runs down and is shocked to discover that Jim is unharmed. At home, Jim insists that he was just lucky but eventually admits that he has superpowers and gets Michael to hit him with a shovel to prove it. Stephanie rushes in at high speed, so Michael discovers about her power too, and soon he finds out about Daphne and JJ's abilities as well. That night, Stephanie admits that she doesn't trust Michael with their powers but Jim begs her to give him a chance. The next day, Jim takes Michael to see the lair. George is angry but Jim explains that he wants to show Michael how he makes a difference. When Michael has left, George tells Jim that he checked out the van that reversed into him and discovered it belongs to a loan shark called Frank Matthews, meaning that Michael must owe him a lot of money.
Michael pulls JJ out of school, claiming that there is a "family emergency", and takes him to the racetrack. JJ uses his powers to work out the best odds and chooses the right horses time after time. After receiving a phone call from the school, Stephanie and Jim ring Michael and realise that he has taken JJ to the races. Michael brings JJ at home and Jim and Stephanie complain that Michael took advantage of their son. Jim asks what's really going on with Michael and he claims that he needs some seed money for his shoe business. Daphne appears behind him and reads his mind, discovering that he is lying. She shakes her head, and Stephanie takes her outside. Michael admits to Jim that he lost a lot of money gambling and owes $15,000. He asks Jim to use his powers to help him. Jim goes to see Frank Matthews and offers to pay back the money over six months. However, Frank reveals that Michael actually owes $150,000. Jim is furious and goes to tell George. They go to the lair to think of a plan but discover that all the equipment has been stolen. Jim immediately blames Michael and goes home to confront him. Michael insists that he had nothing to do with it but Jim yells that he always lets everyone down. He adds that Michael didn't come to visit when their father had a heart attack and explains that he needed his support. Michael admits that he didn't realise and Jim shouts that he never does.
Michael packs his things to leave and Daphne hugs him goodbye. As she does, she receives his memories and sees images of an ultrasound. She goes to see her father and reveals that Michael didn't rob the lair because he was at an ultrasound appointment with his partner. Jim rings Michael to apologise for accusing him, but Michael admits that he has bigger problems. Frank takes the phone and threatens to kill Michael if he doesn't get the $150,000 in the next 24 hours. JJ suggests that he could win the money by gambling, and Jim reluctantly agrees. The duo rake in a lot of cash at the track, and bet all their winnings on the penultimate horse. The horse is winning but pulls up lame just before the end. JJ admits that he can't predict injuries and apologises, but Jim says he'll think of a new plan. He goes to see Frank and offers himself in exchange for Michael. Michael begs him not to do so but Frank agrees to the deal. However, Michael suddenly attacks the men and Jim is forced to help him. They manage to overpower the men and, although Jim is angry with Michael for being reckless, he thanks him as well. At home, Michael prepares to leave and Jim hands him a cheque - the reward from the police for capturing Frank. He explains that he wants Michael to use it for the baby. Michael admits that his life changed when he saw his baby at the ultrasound appointment. He also apologises for not visiting when his father had a heart attack, explaining that he sat in the hospital car park and didn't think his dad wanted to see him. Michael and Jim hug and say goodbye. When Michael has left, Jim receives a call from George. He heads over to his house and George explains that his insurance covered everything in his lair. He opens the door and Jim is thrilled to see a much more luxurious and hi-tech lair. "Thank you Bay Side Mutual," George grins.
Elsewhere in the episode, Daphne is placed on the peer disciplinary committee and uses her powers to decide whether the students are guilty. She passes judgement on the last student, Chris, who is accused of having performance-enhancing drugs, but as he leaves she reads his mind and realises he was covering for someone. She confronts him and asks who he was trying to help but he refuses to say. Suddenly, Chris's brother Drew arrives and the pair leave together. Daphne finds JJ and persuades him to use his powers to break in to Drew's locker. Sure enough, the duo find drugs inside. Later, Chris confronts Daphne and complains that his brother has been suspended until he can be evaluated. Daphne suggests that he is getting the help she needs and she doesn't care if Chris hates her. Chris replies: "Actually, you do care. I just don't understand why." Daphne explains that she knows what it feels like when people think you're something that you're not and adds that she knows Chris feels the same way. She leaves.
Meanwhile, 'Joshua' wakes up and Katie confronts him about Stephanie's journal. When she shows him an open page, he uses his power to change the writing into his own, saying that he loves Katie. Katie apologises for confronting him. Her phone rings and she realises that it is human resources. Later, she arrives at Global Tech and informs Stephanie that she has been promoted. Stephanie is thrilled, but Katie reveals that the promotion means getting her own lab in Miami. Stephanie insists that she is happy for Katie but says she will miss her. Later, she goes to see Dr King and complains that she should have been consulted before Katie was relocated. King explains that he has just found out himself and calls in Victoria Morrow, the new vice-president of HR. Victoria apologises for disregarding protocol but reveals the board has had their eye on Katie for some time. Stephanie is surprised, pointing out that Katie has only worked there for two years. Victoria points out that she wrote Katie great evaluations but King suggests that Stephanie thinks that Katie's performance has slipped. Stephanie insists that Katie is a "model employee" and Victoria asks why she wants to stop her succeeding on her own. Stephanie gets flustered and leaves. Later, Victoria approaches Katie and tells her not to feel guilty for leaving Stephanie. She hints that Stephanie said something and when Katie questions her, she claims that Stephanie said Katie doesn't have enough experience to run her own lab. Katie insists that Stephanie couldn't have said that but Victoria replies: "Some people have to be the only star." Later, Stephanie starts chatting to Katie but she refuses to respond. Eventually she reveals that she heard about her conversation with King and complains that Stephanie tried to sabotage her promotion. Stephanie tries to explain but Katie criticises her for not supporting her and storms out.
Later, 'Joshua' goes to see King and explains that sending Katie away won't change things. He explains that their arrangement is over, but King warns that he will soon become weak, suffer joint pain and get depression without the serum. However, 'Joshua' reveals that he is going to Miami with Katie. King is furious and, later, calls in Victoria to talk to her. Victoria explains that 'Joshua' just wants to be normal. King tells her to stop 'Joshua' from leaving Pacific Bay. Meanwhile, Stephanie and Katie go for coffee and Stephanie apologises for not supporting Katie with her promotion. The pair make up but, as they go their separate ways, Stephanie spots some panes of glass falling from the sky. She uses her speed to save Katie, and the crane operator immediately comes over to apologise. Later, 'Joshua' asks Katie what happened and she explains there was a problem with the crane. 'Joshua' is suspicious and goes to see King, accusing him of trying to kill Katie. He insists that they are done and threatens King. King laughs his threats off, saying that he is not as intimidating without the serum, but 'Joshua' replies that he will just have to work harder to make King pay. Meanwhile, Katie goes to see Stephanie and explains that after the accident she has realised how lucky she is to work for a superhero. She reveals that she has decided not to move to Miami.
The episode ends with King telling the crane operator that he is "very disappointed". The operator explains that he doesn't know how Katie got away and then suddenly morphs into Victoria. She promises it won't happen again and King replies: "We're going to try a different approach. I know exactly how you're going to help me."What did you think of the episode?
