The AMC zombie drama starring Andrew Lincoln attracted 7.3 million viewers at 9pm, while also achieving a record 3.8 18-49 adults rating. The result is the best ever for any drama airing on cable television.
Over on the networks, Fox's X Factor hit a series low with just 8.74m (3.4) at 8-10pm.
ABC's dramas Desperate Housewives and Pan Am kept descending in the ratings, with 8.24m (2.7) and 5.89m (1.8) tuning in at 9pm and 10pm respectively.
CSI: Miami climbed from last week to 10.51m (2.4) at 10pm for CBS, while The Good Wife also rose to 10.04 (2.1) at 9pm.
The Amazing Race fell slightly to 9.26m (2.5) at 8pm for CBS. 60 Minutes brought in 11m viewers at 8pm.
NBC carried on its Sunday night tradition by winning the night overall thanks to its football programming. The game between the Vikings and the Bears scored a peak of 16.09m viewers (6.0) at 8.30-11pm.
