The actress, who was recently seen as Jill in HBO drama Treme, has been cast as Michonne in the AMC drama and will join the cast as a series regular when The Walking Dead returns for its third season.
Michonne, a former lawyer, is a key character in the comic books. She was seen on screen briefly at the end of the second season finale on Sunday night (March 18), decapitating a walker with her katana sword and saving Andrea's life in the process.
True Blood star Rutina Wesley was linked with the role of Michonne last December, but the casting rumour was denied by her representatives soon afterwards.
Gurira's previous credits also include guest roles in Lie To Me, Law & Order and the US version of Life on Mars.
David Morrissey will also join The Walking Dead as a series regular in season three, playing the Governor.
