Kirkman refused to confirm the casting of The Wire's Chad Coleman as the comic book favourite, but did say that he would be "thrilled" to have the character appear on AMC's zombie drama.
"I can say that I would certainly be thrilled to have Tyreese in the show - he's one of my favourite characters from the comic," the writer told IGN. "I've been a fan of Chad Coleman since I first saw him on The Wire and I think he would be a terrific addition to this cast.
"All that said, this all seems to be rumour so I can't really comment on things either way."
Kirkman also hinted that the show's forthcoming mid-season finale - to air in the US on December 2 - would "attempt to top" season three's early, action-packed episodes.
"If you look at our first few episodes, they could've been season finales in and of themselves," he claimed.
"It's going to be the first time that the prison community and the Woodbury community are facing each other, and it's going to set up some really big stuff for the last half of the season. I think there's going to be quite a few surprises in store for the viewers of the show."
The Walking Dead airs on Sunday nights on AMC and on Fridays on FX in the UK.
