The X Factor USA has revealed the contestants going through to this year's live shows, as a last-minute decision from Simon Cowell means that 17 contestants instead of the expected 16 will proceed to the next stage of the competition.

Panelists Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, LA Reid and Paula Abdul were tasked with choosing only four of the eight acts in their respective categories to move forward following the hopefuls' final performances during the Judges' Houses phase of the competition.

Abdul, who was assigned the Groups category, chose The Brewer Boys, Lakoda Rayne, The Stereo Hoggz and InTENsity to go forward. She insisted that her acts have what it takes to make it into the competition's latter stages.

Her decision meant that 2Squar'd, 4Shore, The Anser and Illusion Confusion were eliminated and sent home.

For the Over 30s, Scherzinger pared the group down, deciding upon Josh Krajcik, Dexter Haygood, Leroy Bell and Stacy Francis as her lucky acts to move into the live shows.

Meanwhile, Elaine Gibbs, Tiger Budbill, Christa Collins and James Kenney received bad news when they were sent home empty handed.

Reid was also hard pressed to decide which of his four contestants would proceed, eventually settling upon Brian Bradley, Phillip Lomax, Chris Rene and Marcus Canty.

Their success meant that Brennin Hunt, Skyelor Anderson, Nick Voss and Tim Cifers exited the competition.

Finally, Cowell struggled to narrow down his Girls category, finally allowing Drew Ryniewicz, Simone Battle, Tiah Tolliver and Rachel Crow to move forward. This left Caitlin Koch, Melanie Amaro, Tora Woloshin and Jazzlyn Little as the unsuccessful acts.

However, following the reveal, Cowell confessed that he had made a mistake in his decision and Melanie Amaro was invited back into the competition as the 17th contestant on the live shows.

The Top 17 will take to the stage in the first live show on Tuesday, October 25 at 8/7c when they will compete to become one of the show's "top finalists", according to a press release from broadcaster Fox.

The successful acts will compete against each other across all categories for the first time on November 2 at 8/7c - the first occasion on which viewers will be able to cast votes.
