The 49-year-old, who was part of Nicole Scherzinger's Over 30s group, was one of the five contestants who were cut from X Factor last week.
However, according to PA, Haygood told Scherzinger he was not happy with the competition and Scherzinger took his complaints to the producers, upon which a deal was offered to Haygood.
"I wanted to leave the show because I was unhappy that I was unable to be a rock artist. I grew up on rock," he said.
"[Producers] seemed to have their way of doing things. I'm not sure why they wouldn't let me be me."
The deal would apparently see Haygood eliminated as long as he agreed to return for the season finale.
He said: "[The producers] took the opportunity to cut me, to let me just fly and do things the way I want to do them."
Last week, Haygood said that he is "happy to be moving on" from the show.
