The teenager landed in the bottom two alongside Stacy Francis but initially seemed reluctant to sing a survival song, saying: "I really don't want to perform, I feel like it's unnecessary."
He did eventually perform after asking mentor LA Reid for his advice, and survived the judges' vote, with Simon Cowell saying he saw potential in him.
Cowell told Entertainment Tonight after the show that he felt "frustrated" by Astro's attitude, saying: "It happens to everyone, I've been doing this a long time. You have to understand those are the rules. No conspiracy. It's the fact you didn't connect.
"You learn from it. He has to come back next week and eat a very large dose of humble pie, he's got to turn it around. It's up to him."
Cowell went on to predict that Astro wouldn't be happy when he watched the footage back, and stressed that the frustration for him stemmed from the fact Astro is a "nice kid" and what happened on the results show didn't reflect who he really is.

During the results, Cowell had criticised the teenager's attitude, saying: "Stop folding your arms, look at me and think about your mum watching the show. You're showing disrespect to your mum and the audience at home."
Astro, however, said that he didn't intend to be disrespectful and became emotional when he explained: "I just feel like if you're going to put me in the bottom two I don't want to perform for people who don't want me here."
LA Reid also spoke to Entertainment Tonight, saying that he understood why Astro was "hurting" at landing in the bottom two but that it was right to "reprimand" him.
"I don't want his fans or fans of this show to think you can be rewarded for having a bad attitude," he said. "I don't like that message at all. He deserves to apologise to the world that watches him and X Factor fans."
Francis, who was mentored by Nicole Scherzinger, has also spoken out on Astro's behaviour during the results show, admitting that she felt "very confused" about why he wasn't pleading his case to remain in the competition.

Astro will compete again next week with the remaining finalists: Josh Krajcik, LeRoy Bell, Melanie Amaro, Drew, Rachel Crow, Chris Rene, Marcus Canty and Lakoda Rayne.
He tweeted after the results show: "Politics!! don't be fooled by what you don't know! Thank you AstroNauts for holding me down!
"Its funny how people are quick to judge not knowing whats going on behind the scenes. Maybe I should have given my Disney smile instead!... I wasn't talking about viewers when I said I don't wanna perform. If you only knew what I know you'd say otherwise (sic)."
Astro added: "I love everyone who loves good music! I will perform for "you" next week! And I will give you my heart! I promise."
X Factor continues Tuesday at 8/7c on Fox
