Simon Cowell's X Factor USA was the highest-rated show on the terrestrial networks last night, early viewing figures indicate.

Two exits from the talent contest were seen by 10.2m and a 3.1 share of 18 to 49 adult demographic.

After X Factor, Bones capped a strong night for Fox with 8.8m (2.8), representing a small improvement on its last original episode.

A Christmas-themed schedule served ABC well, with Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town entertaining 7.2m (2.2) on ABC in the 8pm hour, and the network's coverage of the CMA Country Christmas appealing to 9m (2.1) until 11pm.

NBC's lineup of Community (3.9m/1.7), Parks and Recreation (3.7m/1.8), The Office (5.7m/2.9), Whitney (4m/1.9) and Prime Suspect (4.6m/1.3) did not overtake CBS despite the latter airing repeats.

The Tiffany Network's screenings of Big Bang Theory (10.5m/2.9), Rules of Engagement (8.1m/2.2), Person of Interest (8.1m/1.6) and The Mentalist (7.9m/1.6) held up admirably.

Elsewhere, old episodes of The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle pulled in 1.1m (0.4) and 860k (0.4) respectively.
