The X Factor USA's contestants have been reduced from 16 acts to 12.

Judges Britney Spears, Simon Cowell, LA Reid and Demi Lovato were each told that they had to put two acts through, leaving two to sing for survival.

LA Reid chose to put Vino Alan and Tate Stevens through automatically for the Over 25s, leaving Jason Brock and David Correy to face each other in the first sing-off of the season.

Brock's rendition of 'One Moment in Time' guaranteed his place in the next round, while Correy's take on Kelly Clarkson's 'Since U Been Gone' was not enough to keep him in the competition.

Demi Lovato saved Paige Thomas and Jennel Garcia for the Young Adults.

After a sing-off in which CeCe Frey performed 'Out Here On My Own' and Willie Jones gave a rendition of 'You Don't Know Me', Lovato saved Frey and sent Jones home.

Britney Spears saved Carly Rose Sonenclar and Beatrice Miller automatically for the Teens, putting Arin Ray and Diamond White into the sing-off.

Ray received high praise from the others judges for his take on Whitney Houston's 'I Look To You', as did White for her version of Elton John's 'Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word'. Spears chose to save Ray and eliminated White, and both contestants appeared surprised at the result.

White shouted: "I still love you, Britney!" following her elimination.

Cowell admitted that he was still struggling to make his mind up between his Groups less than five minutes before his decision, saving Emblem3 and Lyric 145.

Sister C and 1432 faced each other in the sing-off, performing Miley Cyrus's 'When I Look At You' and Lovato's own track 'Skyscraper' respectively.

Cowell ultimately chose to save 1432, sending Sister C home. However, he said that he had "made a mistake" with the name 1432 and invited the public to submit another new name for the band via the X Factor website.

The group were originally named LYLAS, but had to drop their previous moniker for legal reasons.

The X Factor USA continues next Wednesday (November 7) on Fox. The show airs on ITV2 in the UK.
