Frey developed a level of popularity with Digital Spy readers over recent weeks, despite falling into the bottom two on a number of occasions throughout the live shows. She had finished second in this week's reader opinion poll.

Fifth Harmony elected to perform 'Anytime You Need a Friend' by Mariah Carey in this week's sing-off, while White chose to sing Lee Ann Womack's 'I Hope You Dance'.

Cowell and Spears each saved their own acts Fifth Harmony and White respectively, while Reid chose to save Fifth Harmony.

Lovato, who had the casting vote, said she feels both acts will have career longevity as a result of the show, but ultimately chose to send White home.

"I'm just happy that - I'm thinking of [former X Factor UK semi-finalist] Cher Lloyd. I mean... look where she is [now]," said White following her elimination.

"When I get off tour, I'll be sure to come back here with one of my hit songs and I'll perform for you guys."

Meanwhile, Tate Stevens resumed his place at the top of the public vote standings ahead of Carly Rose Sonenclar, with Emblem3 in third place.

This week's special musical guests were X Factor season one winner Melanie Amaro, who debuted her brand new single 'Long Distance', and Ke$ha, who performed her new track 'C'Mon' in a world TV premiere.

The X Factor's semi-finals commence next Wednesday (December 12) at 8/7c on Fox. The show airs on ITV2 in the UK.
