Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton each lost two contestants on this week's episode of The Voice.

Tuesday night's instalment of the NBC vocal competition saw the results of the first-ever public vote revealed, following the live performances of Team Christina and Team Blake on last week's first quarter-final.

America was given the opportunity to save one contestant on each team, while both mentors could save a second contestant.

Team Christina were the first to hear the results, with Aguilera admitting that she was upset to see any of her "girls" heading home. "My heart is beating so fast," she said. "I've grown so attached to all of you and I'm literally so sad to see two of you go tonight. I believe in you girls so much.

"I'm sad to see today come but it's a competition and we need to get down to business. But I love you all so much."

Carson Daly then revealed that America chose to save Beverly McClellan, who had sung 'I'm The Only One' by Melissa Etheridge. "I'm shaking in my shoes right now," she said. "Thank you America!"

Aguilera then said that choosing between Lily Elise, Raquel Castro and Frenchie Davis was one of the "hardest" things she'd had to do in her life. In the end, she opted to save Davis, describing her as a "superstar voice".

"My mind is reeling," said Davis. "This means such a great deal to me. I've worked so hard to get here. Christina, thank you so much for giving me this opportunity."

Team Blake discovered their fate at the very end of the episode, which featured the quarter-final performances of Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green's teams.

America chose to save Dia Frampton, who had performed a soulful rendition of 'Heartless' by Kanye West.

"I don't have any words right now," she said. "Thank you so much for voting."

"When I saw Dia's performance last week and what happened on iTunes, I kind of had an idea it might be Dia but you never know," said Shelton. "She came out here and she deserves it. Everybody up there deserves it."

Shelton then had to choose between Jared Blake, Xenia and Patrick Thomas. He told Thomas that he is a "solid country singer", that Xenia is "young and has far to go", and that Blake takes the stage and "burns the house down". In the end, he chose to save Xenia, saying: "I can't affect change with Jared Blake or Patrick Thomas like I can with Xenia."
