It recently emerged that Aguilera and Cee Lo Green will not be coaches on the upcoming fourth season of the show, with Usher and Shakira taking their places in the spinning chairs.
However, NBC explained that the duo could be back for the fifth season as part of a bigger pool of mentors.
"In order to be the best coach I can be on that show [it's a good idea] to go out and be able to have the experience as an artist," Aguilera told E! Online. "Create new experiences for myself so that I can then come back to the show and share that much more."
She added that The Voice's executive producer Mark Burnett "understands that we're artists first", saying: "In order to remain great coaches and to stay relevant, we have to go out and we have to still tour, see our fans one-on-one. I have to feel creatively fulfilled in order for me to then do my job as a coach and be on that show."
Aguilera also described her break from The Voice as "bittersweet", adding that she will miss fellow coach Adam Levine despite their alleged feud last season.
"It's like we have definitely become brother and sister," she said. "We goof around and play around. I'm going to miss it."
The third season of The Voice is currently airing on Mondays and Tuesdays on NBC.
