'The Voice': Battle rounds 3 - Live blog

By
The Voice US - Live blog
The competition continues to heat up on The Voice, and we're losing singers as quickly as they came aboard. With the battle rounds under way, it's up to each and every contestant to give it their best shot when facing off against a fellow teammate to stay in the competition. It's not all bad news, though - even those who don't come out on top have a second chance with the new 'steal' twist this year. Who will coaches Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton keep on their team, and who will they be willing to part with? Join Digital Spy live from 8/7c to find out!

22:00Well, that's it for tonight! Join us at the same time tomorrow (October 16) for even more battles and to see who stays, and who will be going home. It'll be a close one! We'll see you then!

21:58It's not over for Joselyn, though - both Adam and Blake want to steal her. Adam insists it makes more sense for her to be on his team, while Blake declares his love for her. Oh, lord. It's up to Joselyn who she'd like to work with, however, and she chooses... Adam! That makes sense.

21:55Cee Lo is a fan of Joselyn's as she "opened up" in a whole new way, but he can't pick because Sylvia's really strong. Adam calls them both "gnarly good singers", but he agrees with me that sometimes there was a bit too much wavering. However, he chooses Joselyn.

Blake says that he "can't even think that many notes" and thinks they have two different approaches as artists, and he also thinks Joselyn was the winner. However, it comes down to Christina, who admits that it's a tough choice for her. She goes with Sylvia - that's a surprise!

21:48There's a whole lot of wavering ad libs from Sylvia during the performance, which I find sort of annoying. To be honest, Joselyn is killing it and proving herself to be a solid singer. Sylvia is no doubt talented, but she clearly hasn't listened to Christina on not overdoing it. I mean, take it down a notch, lady. Joselyn wins this by a landslide, for me.

21:43Christina's assigning the next battle, and it's between Joselyn Rivera and Sylvia Yacoub. I remember Sylvia! They'll be singing Beyoncé's 'Best Thing I Never Had'. Damn, that's a tall order - you don't touch Queen Bey. Billie Joe thinks that Sylvia may be over-singing it, while Christina urges Joselyn to find her comfort zone in terms of pitch and volume. It's a great song - can't tell who will win this one.

21:36Lelia doesn't get stolen, however. More sad faces!

21:35Christina thinks the performance was "really beautiful" and praises Suzanna's "special" voice and Lelia's falsetto. Cee Lo doesn't think Lelia ever really "took off", while Adam feels like he screwed up in not turning around for her in the original audition. He adds that Lelia is really powerful, as well. It comes down to Blake's choice and he decides to keep Suzanna.

21:33The performance is a good one - it's hard to say who does a better job as they are both so similar, but they also both have great voices and I like them both. Here's hoping whoever doesn't win will get stolen.

21:23Lelia Broussard and Suzanna Choffel are up next from Team Blake. This should be an interesting pair, as they're both pretty good and sort of unique. They're not surprised to be going head to head, and they'll be performing 'Dog Days Are Over' by Florence + The Machine. Nice choice for once, Blake. This is one occasion in which it's not a struggle for the contestants to adjust.

21:13Adam thinks it was "awesome", and that their voices sound amazing together. Blake applauds Todd's great voice, calling him one of the best singers in the competition, while he compares Nicholas to Jesus. Huh. Christina loves Nicholas as he has a unique quality and a lot of "swag". It's up to Cee Lo, however, and it's a tough decision. He is moved by Nicholas in a "very special way" (sounds like a personal issue, Cee Lo), but he also thinks that Todd is an amazing singer. However, he eventually decides to keep Nicholas.

21:10It's battle time, and this has to be one of the weirdest I've ever seen, to be honest. Still, they actually both sound really good! One of the better sing-offs of the evening, though I hesitate to call it a 'battle' as they seem to be having a leisurely Sunday stroll rather than fighting to stay.

21:02Next up, Team Cee Lo's got Rob Thomas around to help Nicholas David and Todd Kessler - again, I don't know either of them, and from the short clips of their original auditions being shown, I'm kind of glad. They're performing Hall & Oates' 'She's Gone', which seems... a little off the mark. Good song, though. The guys struggle to make it work at first, but Cee Lo urges them to connect to the material in order to convey greater emotion.

20:54Benji's up for the steal, but no one wants him. Sad face. :(

20:53Blake says that Sam stays in his zone, while Benji has a bigger range or is just more willing to step out of the box. Eh. Christina says that Sam has an "Adam Levine thing" going on with his voice and immediately caught her eye. Still, she's "down for some yellin' and screamin'", and also picks Benji. Ugh. Cee Lo agrees and whatever, it's up to Adam. He's proud of both guys but is concerned with Benji's lack of control. He picks Sam as the winner of the battle.

20:49The battle is, yet again, "okay", but I'm not spellbound, that's for sure. I think Sam is a bit better, just because he actually sings instead of screams everything like Benji. Mind you, Benji is trying his best to do more singing than shouting, but I just think Sam is more of a natural.

20:41Next up, Team Adam's pairing off Benji and Sam James. I remember neither of these bros, so it's a totally blank canvas, here. Adam has chosen Bon Jovi's 'You Give Love a Bad Name' - another unconventional choice that neither of them would have picked. Mary J Blige is on hand to give advice, though she doesn't seem to have much to offer on this one.

20:34Cee Lo goes with Dez, while Adam says that there are great things about both of them, but they both did an inconsistent job. Still, he also thinks Dez is the winner as he comes off as a bit more seasoned. Blake thinks that Dez has come a long way in a year, but thinks Paulina's character would jump out more from the radio. Huh? Oh, Blake. He still thinks Dez won. It's Christina's choice, though - she's proud of both of them but eventually decides to keep Dez, as he was more consistent.

20:31The battle is pleasant enough - both of them sound good, but nothing mindblowing. They don't have much chemistry, but they have semi-unique voices, so I find it hard to pick between the two of them. Dez is probably a bit more palatable, though - Paulina is overly rehearsed in that 'my parents told me I was a special snowflake while growing up' kind of way.

20:21Moving right along, it's time for Team Christina's Dez Duran to go up against Paulina. I don't really remember Paulina, but this is Dez's second time 'round and I still don't think he's that great. Unfortunately, Christina has assigned them Bruno Mars' 'Just the Way You Are'. Kill me now! Dez over-pronounces some of the words in the song, and Billie Joe Armstrong tells him to just relax. Christina also tells Paulina not to create ad libs. HILARIOUS, coming from the queen of not being able to stay on a single note.

20:17That means Terisa is available to steel, and guess who takes her? Cee Lo! She's still in the game.

20:16Christina is speechless for the first time in the show and is "still processing", so she refrains from commenting. Cee Lo thinks it was "cool" and appreciates the soul in Terisa's voice and how much she got into the performance.

Adam is also speechless, joking with Blake that he really outdid himself this time, as it was odd but good. He also likes that they've never had a mariachi singer before, though he notices that Julio seemed intimidated. Still, he would choose Julio, as he's something completely different. Blake knows it was a hard song to sing and thinks they both did awesome, but he eventually decides to keep Julio.

20:10The performance itself is... alright, I guess. Terisa certainly rises the occasion and gets into it. Julio sounds okay, but is so visibly uncomfortable with any sort of movement that I feel a bit uncomfortable watching. I maintain that it's a really bizarre song choice and they both could have had an opportunity to do a lot better with another track. Ah well.

20:05Ah, we're jumping right into it! The first battle of the night is between Julio Castillo and Terisa Griffin. I love Terisa and think she's got tons of personality, so I'm sort of rooting for her on this one. They're from Team Blake, and he's got Michael Bublé back for help. Unfortunately, he's assigned them 'Conga' by Gloria Estefan - a great track, but... eh?

They have trouble getting down the proper breathing and rhythm of the track, which is a difficult one to learn. Terisa admits that she thinks Julio, who does mariachi, has the upper hand, but she still wants to outshine him somehow.
