Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has claimed that sex is "very important" to the show.

The actor, who plays Jon Snow, hinted that the forthcoming second season would be even more explicit than the first.

"The second season doesn't hold back in that area," he told Vulture. "We go even further in our explicitness, because sex is being used as a weapon. It's such an important part of the series."

Downton Abbey actress Rose Leslie will appear in the new episodes as Ygritte, a wildling woman who has a "tempestuous" relationship with Snow.

"All I can say is there is a girl," he explained. "Whether they fall in love, I can't say. I wouldn't call it love.

"But I can say that Rose can really take the p*ss out of you. We got into some healthy scraps."

New Game of Thrones cast addition Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos Seaworth) recently admitted to Digital Spy that the sex scenes on the show are "extraordinary".

"You couldn't do it on network," he said. "[But] it reflects the spirit of the books."

Game of Thrones returns to HBO in the US on April 1 and to Sky Atlantic in the UK on April 2.
