E! now reports that the series, which shoots on location in countries like Croatia, Iceland, and Northern Ireland, costs around $6 million to produce per episode.

The recent Blackwater episode which aired last night (Sunday, May 27) featured some of the most expansive set pieces the show has ever had, with an epic battle taking up most of the screen time.

Series co-creator David Benicoff admitted to Entertainment Weekly that he and the makers of the show "went pleading to HBO for more money [for the episode]. We made our case why we needed the battle and they obliged."

Game of Thrones has become one of HBO's highest viewed programmes since the premiere of its first season last year.

A video game based on the series is scheduled for release next month.
