The network had considered debuting its new drama Kings or launching the fourth volume of Heroes in the slot, but opted instead to schedule in the Steve Carell-fronted comedy after the game ends on February 1.
NBC scheduling chief Mitch Metcalf said: "The Office is a perfect fit for after the Super Bowl. It's going to be a hilariously funny hour, and I think people will be in the mood to laugh after the big game."
Explaining why NBC shunned dramas for the coveted slot, Metcalf continued: "You just don't want something that's too heavy and some of the best performances after the Super Bowl have been comedies. This could bring a whole new audience to the show."
Last year's Super Bowl, which saw the New York Giants triumph over the New England Patriots, was watched by 97.5 million.
