Speaking to TV Line, Paul Feig appeared to dismiss rumours that Holly (Amy Ryan) will not be a part of the storyline.
"All I'll say is she actually is in the episode in a way," he revealed. "[Holly] is involved."
Feig also praised the show's executive producer Greg Daniels for making the episode sentimental but "not in a corny, cloying way".
"Greg is just such a genius," he said. "He knows how to get that tone right."
Carell's final episode of The Office is scheduled to air on April 28 on NBC.
