The Office star Amy Ryan has revealed that Steve Carell was reluctant to leave the series.

The actress told DS that Carell (who plays Michael Scott) was eager to "milk [his departure] out as much as possible".

"Steve directed the [last] episode I was in and we did something that we had in two takes, but he kept doing it. 'Let's go again, let's go again!'" she explained. "I do know just from texting with some of the cast and the crew that that last day was quite a tear-fest! They've spent eight years with each other and genuinely get along so I'm sure they'll miss him."

She nominated the rapping sequence involving Michael and her character Holly Flax from the show's fifth season premiere as her favourite moment on The Office.

"It's only like a 30-second clip of us rapping but [there's] probably 10 minutes of stuff somewhere," she said. "We were just going for broke, it was such a fun job. We would laugh so hard."

Ryan also admitted that she shares some personality traits with the outlandish Holly.

"I definitely have that side," she claimed. "Not as extreme as Holly but I have that. I can really laugh at myself and make a fool out of myself."

Following Carell's departure as Michael Scott, the eccentric Deangelo Vickers (Will Ferrell) took over as office boss. However, a number of stars including Jim Carrey, Catherine Tate, Will Arnett and James Spader will appear in the NBC comedy's season finale as potential replacements for Vickers.

The Office continues on Thursdays at 9/8c on NBC.
