The comedienne is the frontrunner to play the new office manager following Steve Carell's recent departure, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It was previously reported that Tate will appear in the show's seventh season finale, alongside guest stars Jim Carrey, Ray Romano, James Spader and Will Arnett.
Arnett was apparently in contention for the boss role, but is now unavailable since his NBC pilot Up All Night was picked up to series.
Tate is now said to be the first choice of the show's producers, but may also be forced to turn down a series regular position due to theatre commitments.
If she rejects the role, Spader is believed to be under consideration as a potential replacement.
The Office star and executive producer Paul Lieberstein (Toby) recently claimed that the comedy's eighth season will be "more of a shared experience" and insisted that the actor appointed as the new office boss will merely be "an addition to the ensemble".
The show's season finale will air tonight at 9/8c on NBC.
