James Gandolfini has reportedly turned down an offer to join the cast of The Office.

The Sopranos star recently met with the producers of the NBC series, according to Variety.

However, Gandolfini apparently refused a permanent deal, despite being a fan of the comedy. The actor is best known for playing Tony Soprano on HBO's The Sopranos from 1999 to 2007.

He has since starred in such films as 2009's In The Loop and the same year's The Taking of Pelham 123.

Gandolfini will also reunite with Sopranos creator David Chase on upcoming film Twylight Zones and is serving as executive producer on HBO television film Hemingway & Gellhorn, starring Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman.

It was recently reported that James Spader will return to The Office, having played the eccentric Robert California in the show's seventh season finale. However, the Boston Legal star is not expected to become a series regular.

The new season of The Office will air on Thursdays at 9/8c in the fall on NBC.
