The Office star and writer revealed that Dwight will become obsessed with trying to impress new boss Robert California (James Spader) in the wake of Michael Scott's (Steve Carell) departure.
"We made Rainn do some very interesting stuff so far this season," Kaling told E! News. "He does a lot and he's as militaristic as he's ever been. I love Dwight when he has a lot of strict rules and stuff like that. I hope you like it; I think it's really good."
Kaling went on to reveal that the entire dynamic of the NBC series will change.
"[Robert] is like the boss that's scary," she explained. "And you're never sure on where you stand with him and you're kind of obsessed with impressing him, [which is] a totally different dynamic. So I think it will be cool."
Showrunner Paul Lieberstein recently praised Spader's performance on The Office, saying that the former Boston Legal star brings a fantastic energy to the set.
The Office returns this fall on Thursdays at 9pm.
