Viewers saw Bernard become manager of Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch in Thursday night's season premiere of the NBC sitcom.
Helms has previously expressed a belief that The Office would become an ensemble show following Steve Carell's departure, telling IGN: "I think part of what's going to define the post-Steve Carell era for The Office is a real celebration of this ensemble and what everyone is capable of.
"[We're] really... bringing different parts of the cast and family to the forefront at different times and learning a lot more about these people."
Carell played previous Dunder Mifflin manager Michael Scott from the show's pilot episode in March 2005 until late in the seventh season, when his character was seen leaving for Colorado.
