The network's co-chairman Ben Silverman made the announcement but declined to reveal the basis for the show.
"The watermarked idea will not be shared today," he said at NBC's upfront news conference on Wednesday. "You may see some of the (Office) actors on the other show."
The series will debut straight after the Super Bowl, a huge-rating event in the US, on February 1, then move to 9.30pm on Thursdays.
Executive producer Greg Daniels said: "Who would have ever thought that Americans would be subjected to a mock-documentary after the Super Bowl?"
