Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter has revealed that he wants the show to run for six seasons.

The writer/producer made the announcement at the recent Banff World Media Festival in Alberta, Canada, according to HBO Watch.

"God willing we could run six years - that would be wonderful for me," said Winter. "But I take it one season at a time. It would be terrific."

Boardwalk Empire wrapped its second season on HBO in December, with a third season expected to premiere in late 2012.

The new episodes will take place 15 months after the end of season two, which saw Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt) murdered by Nucky (Steve Buscemi).

"It's New Year's Eve 1922, going into 1923," Winter recently revealed, adding that season three will be even "more violent".

Paz de la Huerta (Lucy Danziger) will not return to the period drama for its third run, though Winter has hinted that the actress could return.
