Mad Men star January Jones has admitted that she wants viewers to have a more positive reaction to her character Betty this season.

Jones told E! Online that people's dislike for Betty increases as she gets less subservient.

"I find it really interesting that people think that in seasons three and four she's become unlikeable because she's become more independent," she said.

"Everybody liked Betty when she was in a living hell in season one and two, and now they hate her."

Jones continued: "I think as an audience member you can empathise with her struggling to find happiness - I think it's an ongoing process."

Jones also revealed that fans respond more negatively towards her when Betty has an unsympathetic plot.

"I think it's funny that it carries over into my life, my actual life," she said. "When [creator] Matt [Weiner] writes a storyline that Betty's unlikeable, all of a sudden everybody hates me. I hope she gets a little more well-received [this season]."

Weiner recently revealed that there is a "feeling of being in the midst of change" in the new season of Mad Men, which will premiere with a two-hour special on AMC on March 25.
