The actor told Mondays with Margot that he shares few personality traits with the intense and intimidating Draper.
"I'm a very low-key, shy person but I have a job to do and part of the job is to maintain that character and it is a character," he explained. "People are surprised when they meet me and I'm nothing like that."
The Golden Globe winner went on to admit he's complimented that so many men look up to Don Draper as a hero.
"I wish I got a residual or royalty card from that," Hamm joked. "I think it's a compliment that so many people try to emulate him. I like that people think he's cool and provocative."
The star recently admitted that the reason he and partner Jennifer Westfeldt haven't had children is because he would be a "terrible father".
Hamm co-stars with John Slattery, Christina Hendricks and January Jones in the fifth season of Mad Men, airing on AMC in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
