Jones - who plays Betty Francis on the AMC series Mad Men - has in the past entered the 'Lead Actress' category at the prestigious television awards ceremony, pitting her against actresses like Kyra Sedgwick, Mireille Enos, Connie Britton, Julianna Marguiles and Mad Men co-star Elisabeth Moss.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a switch to the 'Supporting Actress' category may be a bid to better Jones's chances of a win.
Mad Men, which also stars Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks, has won 'Best Drama Series' four consecutive times, but has yet to earn any awards for its nominated actors.
Downton Abbey made a similar move earlier in the year, when it switched to the 'Drama Series' race for this year.
The FX drama American Horror Story has been submitted to the 'Mini-series' category due to its status as anthology rather than a series, according to creator Ryan Murphy.
Mad Men airs on Sundays at 10pm on AMC in the US and on Tuesdays at 9pm on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
