Mad Men star Jared Harris has discussed his shock exit from the show.

The show's most recent episode 'Commissions and Fees' saw Harris's character Lane Pryce commit suicide after his financial and professional troubles came to a head.

"I probably had two seasons' worth of storyline in this episode," Harris told Hitfix. "I went out with a bang, so I'm very, very happy about that."

The actor suggested that there was a "vindictive" edge to his character's decision to hang himself in his office, leaving his co-workers Don (Jon Hamm), Roger (John Slattery) and Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) to discover his body several hours later.

"There's vindictiveness about how he goes about it," he mused. "He hangs himself in the office. He makes it as difficult for them as possible."

Harris went on to discuss the filming of the scene in which his corpse (played by Harris himself rather than a dummy) is found, revealing that Hamm, Slattery and Kartheiser were genuinely shocked.

"They didn't see me [beforehand]," he said. "When they literally pushed through that door and saw me hanging, that was the first time they had seen it. They didn't see a rehearsal or anything like that.

"That was their first look at it, and that was pretty genuine shock on all their faces. They knew, of course, because they had read the script, but those guys did a brilliant job, the make-up department. And they hadn't seen that.

"They were pretty weirded out by it."

Harris admitted previously that he "shed a tear" after discovering Lane's fate.
