The Colombian-born 37-year-old plays former Married With Children star Ed O'Neill's second wife Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC comedy. She told People that fans are often surprised by the fact that she is not faking her enunciation when they meet her in person.
"I go out to a mall or restaurant and when somebody hears me they'll go, 'Oh my God, it's your real accent'," she explained. "I tell them, 'Yeah, I guess I'm not that good an actress!'"
She added: "I do make the accent a little stronger. I understand English; I read and write English perfectly, but the accent won't go away."
Benjamin Bratt was recently announced to guest star as the ex-husband of Vergara's character on Modern Family, which was given a full season order last month.
