The plot centres around an intimate birthday vacation planned by family patriarch Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill) and wife Gloria (Sofia Vergara).
"Jay thinks that he and Gloria are going by themselves for this romantic getaway. And she surprises him by inviting the entire family," executive producer Steve Levitan told Entertainment Weekly.
Actress Sarah Hyland, 19, who plays rebellious teenager Haley Dunphy, was pictured enjoying a swim with real-life boyfriend Matt Prokop.
She wrote on Twitter: "Just so happy. It's paradise. I'm never leaving."
Ty Burrell, juvenile Phil Dunphy in the series, quipped: "Things go awry. We're just gonna try to just live up to the Brady Bunch Hawaii episode. It's not a ratings ploy. Frankly, I'm tired and wanted to go to Hawaii."
Modern Family airs on Thursday nights at 8pm on ABC.
